Tournament Information

The Australian Intervarsity Debating Championships or “Easters” as it is colloquially known is the first major tournament of each year. It provides a fun and inclusive environment to foster the development of novice debaters. In 2015, the tournament returns to Sydney and its original hosting dates over the Easter weekend.

Debating Style

Tournament Format

Each team consists of 3 debaters, with a maximum of one ‘pro’ per team. A ‘pro’ is defined as someone who has debated at Easters 3 times, or debated at Australs or World’s once.

Everyone can adjudicate the tournament, and we encourage experienced inter-varsity debaters to give back to the debating community as judges.

We have a team cap of 100 to assure high quality adjudication for all rooms.

The Easters format is 3 on 3 debating, with no points of information or reply speeches. The speeches are 6-8 minutes in length.

There are 6 preliminary rounds over 2 days. After these 6 rounds, the top 16 eligible teams progress to the 4 additional knockout rounds.

Judges are also ranked based on the feedback they receive from debaters, and the very best are chosen to adjudicate the finals.
